With rock ‘n’ roll at one end of the concrete-floored space and art covering the walls, the Ex-y Magazines and Vacancy Records create aparty-as-installation-piece that is an arabesque of the Christian hardcoreband that played the house show the night of your senior prom and a Velvet Underground performance at the Factory. The clientele might seem too Critical-Mass-after-party for some, but Shindig has enough art, fashion, recorded tunes, bands, and booze to take away the disaffected posturing seen on anyone from FIT students to the most jaded fashionista manqué this side of grunge. The Shindig party is a little derivative in concept but never ostentatious and is certainly more engaging than listening to side two of The Velvet Underground and Nico backward while fixating on a real banana.
